Take a Closer Look

Maybe you’ve redecorated a room, even tackled a remodel. Imagine facing a renovation of an entire city. Nehemiah just wanted to work on the walls, but that proved to be difficult, even with King Artaxerxes’ help. Notice that Nehemiah forged ahead because he had the best authority to succeed—God’s.

The three foreigners tried to undermine the project, but Nehemiah stood firm. What was behind his confidence? At first glace, it seems it would be the authority of the Persian king. After all, Nehemiah possessed the finances, materials, and letters of authority his taunters claimed he didn’t have. How easy it would have been to silence them with that proof. But Nehemiah didn’t. Instead he told them, “God will help us succeed,” and “We his servants will rebuild.”

As much as Nehemiah appreciated the support of the Persian king, that meant little compared to the authority of God—the King of kings. In fact, he spent months talking to God before he approached the king. He wouldn’t have moved forward without God. He was that kind of person. So, in the face of threats, he could confidently answer by whose authority he would rebuild—and by whose he would succeed.
